Zip-a-dee-do-da

Alright, there has been some progress since the last update. I have just returned from the blood clinic and had all the blood work done that I need for my physical. I am doing my physical in a sort of two step process. I had the blood work done today (they took a lot of blood) and I brought the urine test home because I was not able to produce. The two large glasses of water I just drank will surely help me with that though. The second part of the physical will be the actual physical on November 1. This will be height, weight, blood pressure etc. so this will be the easier of the two.

I am still waiting for my background checked to be mailed to me, but once that is done I am pretty much ready to move onto the next step.

I am not really sure what the next step is though. I assume it will be an outline of the job, the Disney look-book and some other details about life on the ship.

Carousel of Progress

So things are going along pretty well now. I went to the police station and requested my police record. They say it can take up to 4 weeks to get it, but the last time I requested one it came within 3 days and that was a vulnerable sector check which takes longer. So when I get that in the mail I fax that to Cast-a-way and then I am finished with that.

I am going to be starting some of my physical soon too. Because I am using my own doctor, and my appointment is November 1 and that is getting a little late, I am getting some of the blood tests done early. They have to check that you have vaccines for chicken pox, mumps etc. so I want to get that check done early so I can get the inoculations if I need them. They are also doing a more general blood test to make sure that everything is alright, like hemoglobin etc. Once that is complete I think I get the rest of the paper work about the Disney look, what my position entails etc.

Also!!! I received my luggage from L.L. Bean! It is beautiful. I have never had any matching luggage or anything like that so this is pretty exciting!

These are the three pieces I bought. One is an extra-large rolling duffle bag, a laptop backpack for my carry on, and a bathroom caddy.

This is the duffle bag. It folds down fairly flat but it holds a tonne of stuff!! I am a little worried that I wont be able to fit it anywhere in the cabin, but I guess I can always put it in the closet. I hope it will be thin enough to slide beside the desk or in a corner somewhere.

So this is the bathroom caddy. My parents have had an L.L.Bean bathroom caddy for years and years for camping. I thought this was a great idea because I can keep all my bathroom supplies in it and hang it up in the bathroom when I am using it (it has a hook at the top and a little removable shampoo/soap caddy for in the shower that also has a hook). I can hang it from the shower head or the curtain rod and I think it will be a real space saver. I got the medium size and I think it will be great for my day to day supplies.

I am going to be using this backpack as my carry-on. I am using it for school right now and I love it! It has a padded spot for my laptop and tonnes of room inside. I think this will also be useful in ports for shopping and wifi stops. Crew on the ships tend to get off at the ports when they can and use the free wifi in the area to catch up with their loved ones. I can bring my computer ashore with this back pack, but I can also take it shopping at walmarts and pack all my stuff in it. So when I get off the ship to go buy shampoo or whatever else I need, I can just shove it in here and go. I think overall these three purchases will be worth their weigh in gold when I am on the ship.

It is only 61 days until I leave and I feel like I have to accomplish so much before I go!! I have to get all my medications in order and be able to get a 6 month supply of them before I leave, I have to order a 6 month supply of contacts and perhaps a pair of spare glasses in case the ones I have break. I am trying to think of things I might possibly need as far in advance as I can so I am not scrambling the week between when I graduate and when I leave! eek!!!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Happy Canadian Thanksgiving everyone!

Since my mother and I are allergic to turkey we are having the family over and having our traditional roast beef! Yum yum!

Now onto DCL news. I have faxed my hire information to the number they provided, but I might e-mail it to the recruiter tomorrow just to make sure it gets there. Also tomorrow I am going down to the police station to start my police check and I have an appointment for November 1 to get my physical done. I am going to see if there is anyway I can get in a little earlier than that, but we shall see.

So this will complete the first set of paperwork, I think there are a few more rounds of e-mails after this but I am not positive about it.

Well, have a great long weekend!!

Ask and you shall receive

I got an e-mail from DCL today!!! It is starting the process of medical, background check, safety and employment forms.

There is a general employment form you have to fill out, just so your information is on file. It is things like your emergency contact, birthday, social security etc. The same sort of form you would have to fill out for any job.

Then there is a little note on getting a background check from your own country. I have had to do this multiple times for work and volunteering so I know the routine. It is just a matter of finding sometime to go downtown and wait a few hours to get the paper work. I then have to send that to cast-a-way recruiters and I guess they will send it to DCL? I'm not too sure about why, but I will have to fax it to them.

Next is the medical information. You need to get a physical to make sure you are healthy enough to work on the ship. You can do the physical through your own physician or two companies that work with DCL. I am going to do it through my own physician because I already have an appointment booked for a physical anyway, so might as well get two birds with one stone.

The there is a weird safety form. I think I will just have to print it out and bring it with me for all the safety training you do before your embark date. So from December 14-18 I will be doing traditions (learning about the Disney company and their expectations. I have already done this when I worked in Disney World) and then there are a few days of safety training so that you will know what to do in an emergency. There are about 20 items on this list to learn, so I think it is going to be intensive safety training for a few days.

There is also a form you have to fill in recognizing all the Disney expectations (like no visible tattoos, you know you are going to be working everyday for long stretches of time, etc.).

This is making this whole process feel more real!!! I have already filled out the employment form, I am going to get my police check done tomorrow, and if I can use my own physician I will have my medical booked!

Toodles for now!

Shooby-dooby-doo-doo-doo-ohhhhh

So I just got an e-mail from LeeAnn today telling me I should be hearing about my paper work and medical in the next couple of days. I am so excited to get this next step started so it can feel a little more real.

Now, for your reading pleasure I am going to make a list of things I am looking forward to while working for DCL.

1.Going to Hawaii!!! It has never been very high on my places to visit, but it definitely has been on there. I would never think "I want to go on vacation, let's go to Hawaii!!!" I think it will be super cool to see Hawaii from the ship and be able to see all the islands.

2.Alaska! It was never on my list of places to see, but when I went on the DCL cruise to Alaska this summer it was absolutely amazing. It is so serene, picturesque, and rainy! I think after all the Mexican sun and heat it is going to be nice to cruise North.

3.Guest Services! I am so excited to be working for Disney again in a new capacity and I think guest services is going to be amazing. It seems like a really great team, management staff and all around good time. I know you are working and living with the same people and that can sometimes cause drama, but I am not a dramatic person and I hope I will get along with everyone. The guest contact is going to be so great too. Even though you do get the people who complain, I think most of the contact is just inquires and people really enjoying their vacations. It is a really special feeling to know that you have solved someone's problem and made their vacation magical.

4.Making new Friends! Some of my best friends I met down while working at Disney World. There seems to be a special sort of quality you have to possess to work at Disney and the people tend to be happy and friendly. There are always exceptions to the rules though.

I have two very big events within a week in December. Graduation and working for Disney. I am looking forward to both, but they are also a source of anxiety. Hopefully once all the paper work etc. is sorted out I will feel a little more relaxed.

Well I will post again once I have all the paper work/figure out what is going on with DCL.

Toodles!
